Police shoot 2 armed robbers to death in fire exchange

Police have gunned down two suspected armed robbers in a gunfire exchange in the Tema Metropolis on Monday, 22 January 2018 as they tried to rob an unsuspecting businessman.

One of the robbers was shot near the community 11 Shell fuel station while the other was pursued and shot at the Kpone landfill site, as he fled.

Tema regional police Public Relations Officer, ASP Benefo Darkwa, confirming the incident noted that the two robbers were notorious and on their wanted list.

He said: “On 22 January at about 9:50 PM, police had a distress call from a victim who was being robbed by two armed men on a motorbike. When the police patrol team arrived at the scene, the robber who had a locally-made pistol fired at police.
The police returned fire and the robber was hit while the other ran for cover in a big gutter.

He tried to escape on a motorbike but he was pursued to the Kpone landfill, where, in an exchange of fire he was shot.

He was later identified to be a notorious armed robber popularly known as ‘short capo’. Both robbers were rushed to the police hospital where they were pronounced dead.”

The bodies have been deposited at the police hospital morgue for autopsy.

Activities of armed robbers on the rise

Recent attacks on security personnel by robbers have been on the rise for the past one month.

Police are currently on a manhunt for some seven Kwabenya escapees who were freed from police custody by a group of armed robbers on Sunday dawn.

The armed robbers set the Kwabenya escapees who were in cells at the Kwabenya Police District Headquarters free after shooting the officer on duty to death.

Meanwhile, the Inspector General of Police, David Asante Appeatu has been summoned by the Defence and Interior committee of Parliament over the recent killings and to outline measures they are putting place to deal with the security situation in the country.
