The Bono Regional Police Command has recovered five assault rifles following an intelligence-led operation targeting robbery gangs operating in the region.
According to a statement from the Public Affairs Unit of the Ghana Police Service in Sunyani, the operation was launched after police received information that a gang was planning to attack traders travelling along the Dormaa–Nkrankrom highway.
Surveillance teams were immediately deployed to monitor the area.
The operation took a dramatic turn in the early hours of February 12, 2026, when officers approaching a parked motorbike came under gunfire from nearby bushes. The officers returned fire, resulting in the death of one male suspect. An AK-47 rifle was found near the body.
“A subsequent search of the area led to the discovery of additional weapons and ammunition hidden in a nearby sack. Items recovered included another assault rifle, a pump-action gun, a Beretta pistol, and various rounds of ammunition. Police also retrieved a motorbike, a black mask, a mobile phone, a dagger, and a set of talismans believed to have been used by the suspects,” the statement added.

The body of the deceased suspect has been deposited at the Police Hospital mortuary for preservation, identification, and autopsy.
The Bono Regional Police Command said investigations are ongoing to identify and apprehend other members of the group.
