The Ghana Police Service has announced a major restructuring of the various positions held by Senior police officers following the recent spate of armed robbery attacks in the country.

The shakeup carried out by the Inspector General of Police, David Asante-Apeatu has seen Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, Director General of Police Operations, being reassigned to head the Research and Planning Department.

He is to be replaced immediately by the Eastern Regional Police Commander, DCOP Simon Afeku.

The IGP has also reassigned 10 others to take up different positions in the Ghana Police Service.

Although the cause of the reshuffle is yet to be known, the spate of robbery attacks over the past few weeks have raised concerns and debate about the ability of the Ghana Police to truly protect the lives and property of the citizenry.

Prior to the Tema incident, where a Lebanese was gunned by robbers after snatching a whopping GHc200,000 from him on Wednesday, February 28, a gang of four robbers stormed the Royal Motors offices at Industrial Area in Accra and made away with Gh¢500,000 on Tuesday.

The Minority in Parliament has subsequently called for the immediate nationwide deployment of a joint military and police task force.
