A Commission of Inquiry is to be set up to facilitate the creation of new regions in the country, President Nana Akufo-Addo has said.

This follows a request by Members of the Council of State who interacted with the President today(Tuesday) to share ideas on national development.

According to the President, the Commission of Inquiry would help deal with issues that have emerged including names and boundaries among others.

"I am now in the position to set up [a] Commission of Inquiry and explain their terms of reference to the council so we see what could be done afterwards, “he stated.

The issue of creating more regions especially in the Northern part of the country began in 2008, when the then NPP Presidential candidate, Nana Addo and then NDC Presidential running mate John Mahama both promised to split the Northern region into two.

Their promises were driven by a long-standing demand from the indigenes and residents of the Western part of the Northern region that development was skewed towards the Tamale metropolis and towns like Savelugu, Walewale and Yendi in the Eastern part.

The issue was also raised ahead of the 2016 elections and then candidate Nana Akufo-Addo pledged to address the concerns of the people when elected.

The creation of the Regional Reorganization and Development Ministry headed by Dan Botwe was the first step towards fulfilling the promise.

Nana Akufo-Addo thanked the Council of State for their advice on the subject and urged them to continue with their work on giving sound and prudent advice for the advancement of the country.

He expressed confidence that the quality of personalities that make up the Council of State would help drive the developmental agenda of government.
