The Ghana Health Service(GHS) has announced that it will from next year, employ medical doctors and dentists through a quota system.

This, according to the Director-General of the Service, Dr. Anthony Nsiah Asare would curb the practice where some doctors decline postings to rural areas of the country.

Ghana’s doctor to patient ratio currently stands at one doctor to 8,000 patients and government has expressed its determination to address the situation.

Dr. Asare who was speaking at the congregation of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology(KNUST) said doctors would now have to apply to their respective regions before they are engaged.

He noted the rural and deprived communities remain a priorities and efforts are being made to ensure that each district would have a functional hospital with doctors that would serve the people.

Unfortunately, he said, it has been observed that most doctors and dentists are reluctant to accepting posting into the rural areas after their housemanship which is not helping health delivery throughout the country.

"This year, we have started interviewing doctors and they would not be posted anymore. We will not sit in Accra and post them but ensure they are engaged at the various communities," he stated.

The quota system would allow a percentage of doctors to be sent to the deprived areas of the country to ensure that health delivery is guaranteed across board.
