The Chancellor of the University of Cape Coast (UCC) has called for a revision of the retirement age of university lecturers to enable the country benefit more from them.

Dr. Sam Esson Jonah says at age 60, lecturers reach the apex of academic maturity but are forced to retire.
He said the situation makes public universities lose such brains to the private universities.

Speaking at the 50th congregation and fifth swearing ceremony of the School Of Medical Sciences at UCC, he also bemoaned the institution's rate of rejection of qualified admission of students who want to study medicine.

He explained that it is as a result of numerous uncompleted projects militating against the capacity to increase enrollment.

The chancellor wants the government to consider the directive that mandates universities to channel 34 percent of their internally generated fund to the Consolidated Fund since it is very discouraging to the universities that are always cash strapped.

Dr Jonah prevailed on the government to grant financial clearance to the universities for them to be able to employ lecturers.

He congratulated the inductees saying "the doctors have every reason to be grateful and proud for the top quality training they have received from the university as they have been adequately equipped with the ethics of the medical profession."

“They have been molded in character and they are today being presented as qualified and well groomed to practice medicine," he added.

Dr Jonah singled out the management and staff of the College of Health and Allied Sciences as well as the School of Medical Science for special commendation for their efforts in training the inductees.

He said the current lecturer-student ratio on the various campuses has quality issues and out of line for any effective scholarship.
