Interior Minister Mohammed Muntaka Mubarak has announced that 70 excavators seized from illegal mining operations will be handed over to National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) to support a nationwide desilting exercise.

Speaking in Parliament on June 10, he said the excavators, confiscated during anti-galamsey operations, will be redeployed to clear drains across the country as part of efforts to address flooding and improve environmental sanitation.

According to the minister, the handover is expected to take place next week, after which NADMO will use the equipment to desilt drains in flood-prone areas.

Flooding continues to be a major challenge in several parts of Ghana, particularly in Accra, where heavy rains frequently cause property damage, displacement of residents and disruptions to economic activities.

Experts have attributed recurring urban flooding to choked drains, indiscriminate waste disposal and unregulated construction on waterways.
