Chaos erupted at the Ho Central Mosque in the Volta Region on Friday, December 26, 2025, when armed assailants opened fire, leaving at least 10 people injured, two of them critically.
Preliminary reports indicate that about five masked men carried out the attack, causing panic among worshippers.
While the exact motive has not been officially confirmed, the incident is widely believed to be linked to a long-standing dispute over the mosque’s Imamship.
Police quickly responded to the scene and have arrested some suspects, while the military has been deployed to Ho to restore order and prevent further escalation.
Several victims recounted scenes of terror to the media, describing the sudden gunfire and the scramble to safety.
Mohammed Kidzah, a youth leader at the mosque, called for urgent resolution of the underlying conflict, warning that continued tensions could lead to more violence.
According to eyewitnesses, the attack occurred shortly after the Regional Chief Imam had left the mosque.
The attackers were reportedly instructed to target the Chief Imam.
When he sought refuge in a nearby house, his son was shot in the leg.
Authorities continue investigations into the incident as efforts are made to ensure the safety of the mosque community.
