President Akufo-Addo has reiterated that the University of Environment and Sustainable Development campus will remain at Somanya.

There were earlier claims that the government is looking at moving the campus from Somanya to Bonsu which did not go down well with the people of Yilo Krobo.

Addressing a durbar of Chiefs and people of Krobo at Somanya in the first day of his Eastern Regional tour, the President indicated that the contractual agreement signed with the Italians who have provided 45 million euros funding for the project does not allow any individual, including himself to make such a move.

“This is the misinformation that is being peddled by our political opponents. These are people who are looking at a long period in opposition. It is only one University of Environment and Sustainable Development here in the Eastern Region. It is the first public University in the Eastern Region,” he said.

The Akufo-Addo led government has for the past months been accused by the minority in Parliament for wanting to relocate the University of Environment and Sustainable Development to Bunso instead of the earlier plan of siting it at Somanya.

Later information gathered indicated that indeed that University would have a campus constructed at Bunso and Donkorkrom, but the main campus will remain at Somanya, also in the Eastern Region.

The University of Environment and Sustainable Development when completed would offer degree programmes in environmental studies, climate change, urban development, Water Resources Development, Energy Sustainability, Energy Economics and Agriculture.

It is to have four undergraduate Schools – the School of Natural and Environmental Sciences, the School of Sustainable Development, the School of Agriculture and Agriculture Entrepreneurship, and the School of the Built Environment.

There will also be one graduate school, comprising three research centres made up of the Centre for Agra Entrepreneurship, the Centre for Agriculture and Bio-Technology and the Centre for Sustainable Resource Development.
