Akyenkwaa Nana Kofi Asare, a political show host at Wontumi Radio in Kumasi, has been remanded in police custody for one week.

This was after he appeared in court on Thursday, August 14, 2025, following his arrest days ago.

The presenter is accused of making on-air comments linking President John Mahama to a military helicopter crash that killed eight people.

At Thursday’s hearing, the court ordered Asare to remain in police custody pending further investigation, rejecting an application from his lawyers for bail.

Speaking to reporters after the ruling, defence counsel Enoch Anhwere Afoakwah criticised the decision as a “miscarriage of justice”, saying the court had overlooked strong surety offers, including from Wontumi Multimedia shareholder Bernard Antwi Boasiako.

“I noted to the court that Bernard Antwi Boasiako is a man of substance, with sufficient means and proven integrity, who was present in court and willing to stand as surety for him,” Mr Afoakwah said.

“Upon all this, the court did not find favour in the provisions ascribed in law in plain language. The court’s language was that refusing bail would calm tempers down — but who is the complainant in this matter?”

Afoakwah said the legal team plans to appeal the decision at the High Court.
