Former Vice President and NPP flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has strongly criticised the GH₵50 million bail imposed on Ashanti Regional NPP Chairman, Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, describing it as a calculated move to delay his release.
Speaking to the media after a high-level meeting at the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB) headquarters on Friday, Dr. Bawumia expressed frustration over what he called “politically motivated obstruction of justice.”
“The GH₵50 million bail condition is excessive. I don’t know how many people in Ghana can provide surety worth that amount. It was clearly set to frustrate his release,” he said.
Dr. Bawumia, who led a party delegation to check on Wontumi, revealed he was unable to see the embattled chairman due to security concerns caused by the large crowd that had gathered outside the NIB premises.
He condemned the harsh bail conditions but called on NPP supporters to remain calm as the party explores all legal avenues to secure Wontumi’s release.
“We will follow due process and exhaust all legal options to ensure that Chairman Wontumi regains his freedom as soon as possible,” he assured.
Wontumi has been in custody since May 27, 2025, facing allegations of fraud, causing financial loss to the state, and money laundering.
Although bail was granted on May 28, he remains detained over difficulties in meeting the conditions.
