President John Dramani Mahama has secured a commitment from AU Commission Chairperson Mahmoud Ali Youssouf to place the ongoing xenophobic attacks in South Africa on the agenda of the next AU Summit.
During bilateral talks on the sidelines of the AU Extraordinary Summit in Accra, President Mahama made it clear that Ghana holds no ill will toward South Africa but cannot ignore the pain and losses suffered by our citizens and other Africans caught up in the crisis.
"Sweeping the matter under the carpet will not resolve the root causes," the President stressed, adding that bringing the issue before the AU gives South Africa a fair platform to respond and gives all of us a chance to find lasting solutions together.
This comes after Ghana had to airlift citizens home following the escalating violence, and formally wrote to the AU Commission demanding action.
President Mahama reaffirmed Ghana's commitment to promoting dialogue, African solidarity and collective efforts to protect the lives and investments of citizens across the continent.
