Former President John Mahama has responded to President Akufo-Addo over his 'yet to congratulate him' comment.

President Akufo-Addo in a message to the nation on Constitution Day on January 6, disclosed that three years after winning the 2020 elections, his main opponent, John Dramani Mahama was yet to congratulate him on the elections victory.

"On a lighter note. three (3) years on, I am still waiting for my main opponent in the 2020 elections to congratulate me on my victory," he said.

However, in a tweet on Sunday, the NDC flagbearer expressed sadness that Akufo-Addo has yet to comment on the eight Ghanaians who lost their lives during the 2020 general elections.

"On a rather sad note, it is unconscionable that three years after these tragic events, our President, Nana Akufo-Addo, has not uttered even a word of sympathy to the bereaved families. The perpetrators of these murders continue to walk as free men and still hold on to positions of authority and power.

The use of thugs and rogue elements within the security agencies to disrupt elections in the 2020 elections, leading to the loss of eight lives will forever be remembered as Ghana's day of infamy and an indelible blemish on our democratic credentials established over the last 32 years of constitutional rule."

President Akufo-Akufo in a recent statement assured Ghanaians that the 2024 general elections will be conducted in a free, fair and transparent manner, devoid of electoral violence.

According to him, entities or persons who will attempt to disrupt the 2024 general elections will be dealt with in accordance with the laws of the country, the Presidency has said.

A statement, Mahama has reacted to calling on the government to ensure that not even a single sloe is lost in the upcoming elections.

This government must appreciate that they have an obligation to guarantee peaceful elections this year, and the loss of even one Ghanaian life will not be countenanced."

Meanwhile,  Mahama has assured the people of Techiman that the next NDC administration will ensure a speedy investigation of the December 2020 election-related killing of innocent voters in Techiman and punish the culprits.

The Ghana Police Service have also announced a reward of Ghc100,000 for anyone who provides information leading to the arrest and prosecution of the perpetrators in the Techiman South election violence.

In a statement, the Police administration explained that they have been in touch with the victims of the Techiman South Constituency Collation Centre shooting, in which two people died and six were injured.

“The delegation visited each of the eight families in their homes at Techiman and assured them of the resolve of the police to get to the bottom of each incident.

“The families were told that even though investigations so far have not identified those responsible for the shooting incident, the police were determined to pursue the case for as long as it takes till the perpetrators are brought to book,” the statement added.

It continued: “The case has therefore been referred to the newly established Cold Case Unit which is responsible for the continuous review, investigation and tracking of cases long after the trail might appear to have died and public interest had gone down.”
