Former attorney general, Martin Amidu, has condemned the decision of the electoral commission to challenge a high court ruling that determined it had wrongly disqualified Papa Kwesi Nduom, the flagbearer of the Progressive People’s Party (PPP) from contesting the December elections.
The EC has said that it disagrees with the high court and is proceeding to the Supreme Court for a ruling that will quash the high court's decision.
But in an article sent to the media in Accra, Amidu argued that the EC’s decision to challenge the ruling is not smart with barely five weeks to the elections.
According to him, the back and forth in court could cause the elections to be postponed.
He said if it comes to that, the EC chairperson, Madam Charlotte Osei will have to take responsibility.
“…since the commissioner has knowingly chosen the path of adversarial confrontation instead of pragmatic alternative dispute resolution in view of the limited period to the election date of 7th December 2016, I hope she will, within the letter and in the spirit of the Constitution, take full responsibility for the natural and probable consequences of her actions as chairperson of the Commission," he said.
Mr Amidu urged Madam Osei to be open to “pragmatic, prudent and common sense solutions to the several election disputes that have besotted the commission.
