There has been a fight among New Patriotic Party (NPP) supporters in the Awutu Senya East Municipality of the Central Region over President Nana Akufo-Addo’s choice of MCE.

Supporters of the acting MCE, Michael Essuman Mensah, on Saturday clashed with supporters of the newly nominated MCE, Anita Love Obo Amissah at CP Abeasi.

Reports say one person has sustained an injury.

Nana Yaw Kumah, Deputy Communications Director of the NPP in Awutu Senya East, told Citi News that persons loyal to the acting MCE launched an unproved attack on supporters of the newly nominated MCE.

The President’s MMDCE nominations have been met with agitations by residents who say their choice or persons with insight into their problems have been sidelined.

For instance, the appointment of Elizabeth Sackey for the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA), instead of the Nii Adjei Sowah, whom the committee had recommended, prompted some residents of Ododiodio to demonstrate, resulting in the arrest of three persons.

There have been similar agitations in other parts of the country.

Speaking on TV3’s Key Points on Saturday, September 25, 2021, President of the Chamber of Local Governance (CHALoG), Dr Richard Fiadomor, said while these agitations are not new, the recent ones are unprecedented.

“This is not the first time that there have been pockets of violence. But what happened this time around, which I think is unprecedented is the leakage of the vetting committee’s report to the President…the public was privy to information that should have been exclusive to the president. Whoever leaked that report just tied the hands of the President,” he said.
