The Electoral Commission (EC) has reopened nominations for the Tamale Central parliamentary by-election after two of the three initial candidates withdrew from the race, leaving only one contender, the commission said on Friday.

The EC said the decision was in line with Article 50(2) of Ghana’s 1992 Constitution, which mandates that if only one candidate remains after others withdraw following the close of nominations, a fresh 10-day period must be allowed for new nominations.

“At the close of nominations on Wednesday, 10th September 2025, three candidates stood nominated for the Tamale Central Constituency parliamentary by-election. Two of the three candidates, however, withdrew their nominations after the close of nominations,” the EC said in a statement.

“In accordance with Article 50(2) of the 1992 Constitution … the Commission will re-open nominations for ten (10) days,” it added.

The nomination period will run from 12 September to 21 September, at the EC’s Tamale Metropolitan office between 9:00 a.m. and 12:00 p.m. and from 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. daily.

The commission said interested aspirants can download nomination forms from its website during this period, and either submit the forms themselves or have their proposer or seconder deliver them to the returning officer.

The EC emphasised that under the constitution, candidates who file during this extended period cannot withdraw their nominations.
