EC sets September 2 for Akwatia by-election

The Electoral Commission, Ghana (EC) has settled on Tuesday, September 2 as date for the by-election in the Akwatia Constituency, Eastern Region.

The EC in a statement revealed that nominations will be received at the Demkyembour District Office of the Commission from August 11, 2025 to August 13, 2025 between the hours of 9:00 am to 12:00 pm and 2:00 pm to 5:00 pm on each day.

The filing fee is GHC10,000 per candidate, with a reduced fee of GHC7,500 for female aspirants and persons with disabilities (PWDs).

“All completed nomination forms are expected to be delivered in quadruplicate,” the press release signed by Jean Mensa said.

The EC urged all stakeholders to adhere to the timelines and requirements, reaffirming its commitment to conducting a transparent, fair, and credible by-election.

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has settled on Solomon Kwame Asumadu as its parliamentary candidate for the by-election, while the National Democratic Congress (NDC) will elect its candidate on Monday, August 4.

The Akwatia seat became vacant following the death of the Member of Parliament for the constituency, Ernest Yaw Kumi.

He passed away on Monday, July 7, 2025.
