The government has announced that it will officially roll out its "No Fees Stress policy" on July 4, 2025.
This policy offers academic user fee waivers for first-year students enrolled in public tertiary institutions.
Vice-President Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang announced at a special congregation at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) in Kumasi.
The initiative, which was a key campaign promise by President John Dramani Mahama during the 2024 elections, is part of a broader effort to improve access to higher education.
It is expected to benefit tens of thousands of students in its initial phase.
“The government continues to implement funding models that improve access to quality education,” the Vice-President said.
“One of these is the No Fees Stress policy, under which first-year students in public institutions are exempt from paying academic user fees.”
According to figures from the Students Loan Trust Fund, which oversees the programme, nearly 130,000 students had accessed the online application portal by mid-June, with over 100,000 completing the process.
The Vice-President reaffirmed the government’s commitment to expanding educational opportunities and upholding academic freedom.
