Former Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, believes he is the next in line to be the President of Ghana, as history is on his side.
Speaking with the immediate past Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs) under the Akufo-Addo administration, the Presidential Candidate hopeful of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) said that he is optimistic the sitting president (John Mahama) will hand over power to him in 2029.
Laying out what he described as a historical pattern in Ghana’s political transitions, Bawumia recalled how power was handed over to the past presidents, including President Mahama.
“Rawlings handed over power to Kufuor. They contested in 1996, isn’t it?” he quizzed. “President Kufuor handed over power to whom? Atta Mills. They contested again in 2000 and 2004, isn’t it?”
“And then Atta Mills unfortunately passed away and gave it to John Mahama, in terms of he was elected."
“But the Mills-Mahama government handed over power to whom? Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, whom Mahama had contested.”
“And Nana Akufo-Addo has also handed power to whom? To John Mahama, whom he contested. So now, who is John Mahama going to hand over power to? That is it.”
“It’s clear John Mahama will hand over power to Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia. That is what is going to happen,” he concluded.
For Bawumia to have another shot at the presidency, he would have to be elected NPP flagbearer first, which is scheduled for January 31, 2026.
