President John Dramani Mahama is set to lead Ghana’s delegation to a significant United Nations engagement focused on reparatory justice, departing Accra on Monday for visits to New York and Pennsylvania.

During the trip, he will headline a High-Level Special Event at the United Nations Headquarters on Tuesday, where he is expected to deliver a keynote address on the theme of reparatory justice for the trafficking and enslavement of Africans.

The gathering will draw global leaders and dignitaries to deliberate on addressing the enduring legacy of these historical injustices.

On Wednesday, President Mahama will take the podium at the UN General Assembly as part of activities marking the International Day of Remembrance of the Victims of Slavery and the Transatlantic Slave Trade.

He will present Ghana’s position – endorsed by the African Union – calling for the recognition of the transatlantic slave trade and racialised chattel enslavement as the gravest crimes against humanity.

As part of the commemorative events, the President will participate in a wreath-laying ceremony at the African Burial Ground National Monument to honour the memory of enslaved Africans.

His itinerary also includes a visit to Lincoln University, where he will deliver a keynote lecture, and an engagement with the Ghanaian community at Temple University.
