About 300 members of the National Democratic Congress in the Asutifi South Constituency of the Brong Ahafo Region have defected to the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), a report by classfmonline.com has said.

They cited employment and economic hardship as their reason for joining the NPP.

One of the defectors, Mr Benjamin Kofi Amponsah, told journalists that many of them were graduates who had failed to secure jobs for years.

He said they, therefore, decided to take advantage of Nana Akufo-Addo’s pledge to build a factory in every constituencies across the country and irrigation dams in every village by joining the NPP.

“… we sat down and realised that there is no need to follow the NDC again,” he said.

The news will come as a blow to the NDC which has faced a string of defections in recent days.

Last week, a group of 50 “serial callers” of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the Greater Accra Region defected to the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), it has been reported.

The group also cited economic hardship as its reason for leaving.

The leader of the group, Bugri Mohammed Akayere, said he had witnessed the collapse of many businesses, including his own meat business.

“In the past I slaughtered up to 35 livestock made up of cattle, sheep and goats but today I can hardly sell the five I kill,” he said.
