President John Dramani Mahama has named Hon. Kenneth Gilbert Adjei as the new Minister for Defence, a year after the death of former Defence Minister Dr. Edward Omane Boamah.

In a statement issued by Presidency Communications on Friday, the President announced the immediate reassignment of Adjei to the Ministry of Defence as part of a wider cabinet shake-up.

The move comes exactly a year on from the passing of Dr. Omane Boamah, who died in August 2025 while serving as Defence Minister.

Kenneth Gilbert Adjei takes over the defence portfolio at a time when the ministry is pushing forward with military modernisation and border security operations.

He was previously serving in another ministerial role before the reassignment.

The President also submitted two new ministerial nominations to Parliament — Dr. Zanetor Agyemang-Rawlings for Environment, Science and Technology and Mahama Ayariga for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs — and reassigned Ahmed Ibrahim, MP to Works, Housing and Water Resources.

The communication was signed by Felix Kwakye Ofosu, MP, Spokesperson to the President and Minister for Government Communications.

All nominees and reassignments are subject to parliamentary approval in accordance with Article 78(1) of the 1992 Constitution.
