To prevent the disenfranchisement of some its supporters and maximise its votes in the Volta Region, the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) plans to embark on a political campaign tour of Ghana's eastern neighbours, Togo in November, General Secretary of the party, Johnson Asiedu Nketia has revealed.

According to him, the move is to encourage the party's supporters there return home to vote.

The Volta Region, a traditional stronghold of the NDC since the beginning of the Fourth Republic has been consistently tagged as a haven for non-Ghanaians voters in Ghana's elections due to its closeness to Togo.

Opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) vice presidential candidate Dr Mahamudu Bawumia in 2015 alleged that there existed 76,286 Togolese voters in Ghana's voter register.

Though Dr Bawumia's claims have not been really debunked or affirmed, the NDC General Secretary thinks it was an attempt to dissuade NDC supporters who have ties in Togo from coming to vote.

Speaking at a rally in the Asokwa constituency in the Adansi North District of the Ashanti Region, Mr Nketia stated the decision to campaign in Togo was to prevent the unconstitutionality of any political party stopping Ghanaian registered voters living abroad from exercising their constitutional right during elections.

“Those who said during the voter registration that those in the Volta region are from Togo, they haven’t seen anything yet, next month we are going to Togo to meet the NDC supporters in Togo and tell them that Ghana’s constitution is not two, but just one that is being used to govern Ghana”, he stated.
