The Accra Metropolitan Assembly [AMA] has outlined four major strategies to be implemented to make Accra the cleanest city on the African Continent.

The Mayor of Accra Mohammed Nii Adjei Sowah said the key strategies include education of the public, law enforcement, and infrastructural development.

President Akufo-Addo during the 2016 electioneering campaign promised Ghanaians he will make Accra the cleanest city in Africa. The Mayor of Accra during the National Sanitation Day a week ago reiterated the government's commitment to achieving the vision.

Poor sanitation has been a bane of the capital. Over one hundred people died in a cholera outbreak in 2014 and the June 3 disaster which claimed 160 lives was largely due to choked drains and waterways. Despite these disasters, some people still indiscriminately throw refuse around and the National Sanitation Day has consistency seen low patronage.

Speaking on JoyFM, Mr Adjei Sowah said the implementation of the four key strategies penned down will transform Accra into one of the most promising cities with no filth. According to him, education of the public will create more awareness and evoke the consciousness of citizen not to dump refuse at unauthorised places. With this, residents would keep each other in check.

On infrastructure and law enforcement, he revealed that more recruitment has been done by the AMA sanitation task force and they are to be deployed to various communities to enforce sanitation bylaws. The sanitation courts are also being renovated to prosecute noncompliance persons.Â
