Parliament has referred President John Dramani Mahama’s nominations of three individuals to fill vacancies on the Supreme Court to the Appointments Committee for consideration.
The nominees are Court of Appeal Justices Sophia Bernasko-Essah and Amoako Asante, and former Ghana Bar Association (GBA) President Tony Forson.
Speaker of Parliament Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin formally communicated the nominations to the House during the emergency sitting on Monday, August 24, after reading President Mahama’s letter on the matter.
Following the communication, the Speaker directed the Appointments Committee to vet the nominees and submit its report to the House within the period covered by the notice recalling Parliament.
“I accordingly refer these nominees to the Appointments Committee for consideration and report to the House within the period prescribed by the Notice of Recall,” Speaker Bagbin said.
He further directed that the motions on the nominations be considered within the one-week period of the urgent sitting.
The referral forms part of the urgent parliamentary business for which President Mahama requested the recall of Parliament.
The Appointments Committee is expected to scrutinise the qualifications and suitability of the three nominees before presenting its report to the full House for consideration.
The emergency sitting of Parliament commenced on Monday, August 24, and is scheduled to run until Friday, August 28.
