Central Regional Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Bernard Allotey Jacobs has described as empty rants concerns expressed by some members of the party over last weekend’s Unity Walk in Tamale.

Several party supporters led by former President John Mahama and General Secretary Johnson Asiedu Nketia walked through some selected streets in the municipality.

But the decision has been criticized by some party members who insist the walk was an attempt to galvanize support for Mr. Mahama so he contests the 2020 elections.

Dela Coffie, who has styled himself as a critic of the former president, said the exercise had rather divided the party and wondered why it did not include former Vice President Paa Kwesi Amissah Arthur.

“A supposed NDC unity walk has ended up dividing the rank and file more than it seeks to unite.
A unity walk without Mahama’s own vice president? A unity walk without the founder? A unity walk without the national chairman and leader of the Party? A unity walk without the other NDC Presidential hopefuls? Does this so-called unity walk bring unity or division?"

According to Mr. Coffie, the former president is deliberately disrespecting party structures with his attitude and called on the Council of Elders to step in and call him to order.

“Why the hell is the party leadership giving John Mahama free pass to ignore party structures? And why has the Council of elders said nothing about the so-called unity walk? Was it their idea? I thought the Kwesi Botchway corpse dressing committee report made certain findings? Which part of the recommendations says that John Mahama should lead a unity walk?”

Mr. Jacobs, who was speaking on PeaceFm’s Kokrokoo’ breakfast show, said all those ranting should simply shush it and see the exercise as what it was organized for.

He said party executives in the region organized the exercise and if other regions decide to do same, they should feel free and go ahead with it.

According to him, the focus of the party is to “reactivate” the various branches and so anyone making noise about why potential aspirants were not at the march, should take a hard look at themselves and ask why they were not there because it was an open invitation.

“If somebody is doing his, you too do yours,” he said. “Aspiring  candidates should have been there, I find nothing wrong with it.”

He said the party is on the ground and they are working around the clock to ensure victory is attained in 2020.
