The Minister of power, Boakye Agyarko, has been advised to vacate his position following bribe allegations leveled against him by some members of parliament.

A retired diplomat, K.B. Asante, urged President Nana Akufo-Addo to privately ask Mr Agyarko to resign and offer him another appointment if he is cleared after investigations are conducted.

“It is a good idea that he should leave the scene. You cannot work with a minister with so many allegations especially when we have so many important things to do. So yes here, the president should step in [but] not in the public domain but he should call the minister and ask him, in the circumstances will you please resign so that we go into this matter and if everything is fine I will find another thing for you to do?

In my opinion, yes, he should call him not publicly but quietly and say please I expect you to resign on this matter so that you can clear your name,” he said.

Boakye Agyarko is alleged to have bribed the minority members of the appointment committee with 3000 Ghana cedis each.

The allegations were made by Mahama Ayariga, Alhassane Suhuyini, and Samuel Okudzeto-Ablakwa, who said they received the money from their chief whip, Mubarak Muntaka.

They said Muntaka told them he had received the money from the chairman of the appointments committee, Joe Osei-Owusu, which the chairman told him came from Boakye Agyarko.

However, Muntaka, Osei-Owusu and Boakye Agarko, have all denied the allegations.

Boakye Agyarko told Accra-based Citi FM that he had not “given a single soul a penny”.

"I say so that it is not true without the fear of contradiction. It is a fabrication because the allegation that I said Mahama was corrupt, so they also have to smear me to say that I am corrupt and I have not right to accuse Mahama of being corrupt.

“I am not afraid of man, but if that is how we are going to live our national lives, so be it. But I don’t believe it is the right way,” he said.

He added that he had asked  his lawyers to look into the matter and advise him on a possible court case.
