President John Mahama has rejected criticism that he is deviating from real issues by attacking New Patriotic Party flagbearer, Nana Akufo-Addo, personally.
The president recently stepped up his criticism of Akufo-Addo, describing him as a dictator who, he said, had presided over the disintegration of his party.
“We are looking for a leader who can unite Ghana and not a leader who will divide Ghana. If you cannot unite your own party, how do you unite a nation,†he said.
Akufo-Addo has responded, saying he will not reply Mahama’s “insultâ€.
But in an interview on Metro TV on Tuesday, President Mahama said Akufo-Addo was first to insult him and that he had only fired back.
“…for four years he [Akufo-Addo] has described me as incompetent; for four years he’s described me as visionless; for four years he’s described me as a thief. He says ‘when I come to power I won’t steal your money’ what does that mean? It means I am stealing Ghanaians’ money,†he said.
The president added that he was not bothered by the criticisms directed at him.
“I’m a politician and I know it’s an occupational hazard; sometimes to have your opponents vilify you so I don’t take it as anything.â€
He also explained why he granted pardon to the Montie 3 who were jailed four months by the Supreme Court for contempt.
