Ghana's Black Stars produced a disciplined defensive performance to hold England to a goalless draw in their second Group L match at the 2026 FIFA World Cup on Tuesday in Boston.
The result leaves both teams on four points, with England remaining top of the group and Ghana occupying second place. The Black Stars could secure qualification to the Round of 32 depending on the outcome of Panama's clash with Croatia later in the day.
England dominated possession throughout the match but struggled to break down a resolute Ghanaian defence that remained organised and compact for most of the contest.
The Three Lions controlled the tempo from the opening whistle, with Reece James and Noni Madueke posing the biggest threat down the right flank. However, Ghana's defence stood firm, with Thomas Partey making a crucial intervention early on to halt a dangerous attacking move.
England enjoyed the lion's share of possession, completing significantly more passes than Ghana in the first half, but clear-cut chances were few and far between.
Declan Rice came closest to opening the scoring before halftime when he met a cross from Madueke, only to head over the bar.
Despite spending much of the opening period defending, Ghana threatened on the counterattack. Antoine Semenyo showed strength and determination to beat his marker and win a corner after driving into the England penalty area.
Harry Kane almost gave England the lead in first-half stoppage time, but his effort was blocked by a crowd of Ghanaian defenders as the teams went into the break level at 0-0.
England increased the pressure after the restart, with Anthony Gordon and Djed Spence combining well on the left before Jude Bellingham set up Madueke, whose effort was blocked. The rebound fell to Gordon, but goalkeeper Benjamin Asare collected comfortably.
Kane later tested Asare with a low drive from distance, while Madueke fired over the crossbar as England searched for a breakthrough.
Ghana nearly snatched a dramatic winner with just over ten minutes remaining. Mohammed Fatawu burst forward and released Prince Adu through on goal. Although the striker's heavy touch allowed England's defenders to recover, he still managed to get a shot away while falling.
The effort struck Semenyo in front of goal before England eventually cleared the danger. Ghanaian players also appealed for a penalty during the sequence after apparent contact involving defender Ezri Konsa, but play continued.
England pushed forward in the closing stages but could not find a way past Ghana's determined backline.
The draw strengthens Ghana's hopes of progressing to the knockout stage ahead of their final Group L match against Croatia on June 27.
