The Cranes of Uganda have caused the first upset of  AFCON 2019 by defeating the Leopards of Uganda 2-0 at the Cairo International Stadium in their Group A opener.

Goals from the two lead strikers Emmanuel Okwi and Patrick Kaddu either side of the half ensured victory for the Cranes.

DR Congo, two-time winners of the AFCON in 1968 and 1974, were touted as favourites by the connoisseurs of the game over Uganda but failed to come to the party as the likes of their top stars of Beijing Guoan based Cédric Bakambu, English Premier League duo of Yannick Bolasie and Arthur Masuaku both of Everton and Westham respectively could not pull their weight as the Cranes record their first win over them in their first encounter in the AFCON tournament.

The win sees Uganda move ahead of hosts Egypt to top Group A with a superior goal difference but level on points. Uganda will next play Zimbabwe who lost their opening game against Egypt while the Pharaohs face DR Congo.

Both matches will come off on June 26, 2019, at 5:00 and 8:00 PM
