President of world football governing body ‎(FIFA), Gianni Infantino, has said that he will‎ propose two more teams to come from Africa whenever the world football decides to increase the number of countries to participate in future World Cup tournaments.

Speaking with journalists after meeting with Nigeria President Muhammadu Buhari in Abuja on Monday, Infantino said Africa deserves more slots at the quadrennnial event.

“If FIFA will be increasing more football teams in the World Cup competition, I will propose two more teams to come from Africa,” he stressed.

The 46-year-old football chief is proposing to expand the tournament from 32 to 40 and if his vision gets the approved, Africa would have seven representatives instead of the five it currently has.

“I believe for the 2026 World Cup, we should have 40 teams and out of the additional eight teams we should have at least two more African teams,” Infantino told reporters.

Elected in February this year, the FIFA boss arrived in Abuja on Sunday with FIFA Secretary General, Fatma Samoura on a two-day visit to Nigeria where is he is also meeting some selected African federation chiefs including Ghana's Kwesi Nyantakyi in a suspected bid to woo African football federations who largely did not support him during his campaign.
