The Black Stars of Ghana suffered a crushing 5-1 defeat at the hands of Austria in an international friendly on Friday.
Austria wasted little time asserting their dominance, with Marcel Sabitzer opening the scoring in the 13th minute.
The Austrian attack proved relentless, and Michael Gregoritsch doubled the lead in the 51st minute. Just eight minutes later, Stephan Posch made it 3-0, putting Ghana on the back foot.
The Black Stars managed a brief moment of hope when Andre Ayew found the net in the 77th minute, cutting the deficit to 3-1. However, the Austrian team quickly restored their three-goal advantage as Carney Chukwuemeka scored in the 79th minute, followed by Nicholas Selwand sealing the 5-1 victory in stoppage time at 90+2 minutes.
The heavy loss highlighted defensive vulnerabilities for Ghana, with lapses in concentration and positioning repeatedly exploited by the Austrian side. Despite Ayew’s effort, the Black Stars were unable to mount a meaningful comeback.
The Black Stars play Germany on Monday in their next international fixture.
