Captain of the national team the Black Stars, Asamoah Gyan will equal Adedi Ayew Pele’s record for the number of appearances at the Africa Cup of Nations when he features for Ghana in Gabon.

Gyan will be marking his sixth appearance at the AFCON to match Pele’s long standing record.

The skipper made his debut in 2008 when Ghana hosted the competition and has not looked back ever since.

In 1982, a 17-year-old, Abedi Pele played for Ghana in the Nations Cup and managed to achieve the record as the only player to have appeared six times as he featured in the 1984, 1992, 1994, 1996 and 1998 competitions.

Gyan is expected to lead the team as they hope to win the ultimate trophy when the competition ends in February alongside individual achievements.
