Appeals by Russian track and field athletes to be allowed to compete in the Rio Olympics have been denied by the Court of Arbitration for Sport (Cas).

68 Russian athletes together with the Russian Olympic Committee (ROC) had hoped a suspension placed on them by the the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) for doping would have been lifted.

Commenting on the news, Olympic 100m and 200m champion Usain Bolt stated "It's sad but rules are rules" adding "doping violations in track and field is getting really bad, …..this will scare a lot of people "

Not everyone sees this as justice including Russian pole vaulter Yelena Isinbayeva who holds the ruling is "a blatant political order".

Some Russians athletes could compete in Rio from August 5 as neutrals if they satisfy certain conditions including agreeing to be repeatedly tested outside their homeland.

Russia was suspended from track and field events by the IAAF in November 2015 following the publication of an independent World Anti-Doping Agency (Wada) report that showed a culture of widespread, state-sponsored doping.
