Boxing event to mark Ghana@60 celebrations launched

Three of Ghana’s finest boxers will be fighting on March 11 in a boxing event at the Bukom Boxing Arena to mark Ghana’s 60th Anniversary celebrations.

The event dubbed, “Freedom Fight Night” and organized by Streetwise Promotions in collaboration with Errol Hawk Sports Management would witness, Richard Commey, Frederick Lawson and Duke Micah battling it out in the major bouts of the night.

Commey would face Belgium-based Tunisian, Hedi Slimani in a WBC International Silver Lightweight bout which would see the Ghanaian attempt to make a case for himself after failing twice in his world title ambitions.

Commonwealth Bantamweight Champion, Duke Micah would take on Mexican Jonathan Aguilar for the WBC International Bantamweight title.

Also, featuring on the night would be Lawson who would battle it out with Jamaica’s Sakima Mullings in the WBC International Silver Welterweight bout.

Lawson after a bizarre defeat to Kevin Bizier from Canada in the United States in November 2015 makes a return to the ring and would be hoping the relaunch his career on the night.

Speaking at the launch of the event on Thursday, Head of Media Sub-committee of the Ghana@60 Planning Committee, Jefferson Sackey has pledge government’s support for the event adding that boxing is an important part of Ghana’s success story.

“Ghana’s success story can be related to sports and boxing to a large extent and it is important to celebrate our 60th anniversary with such a huge boxing event,” he stated.

He added that, there are other sporting activities lined up for the anniversary including a football match between Accra Hearts of Oak and Kumasi Asante Kotoko and a possible game between Ghana and Nigeria.

The boxing event he said, is bringing the whole world to Ghana and optimistic that it would be a successful event.

On his part, Chief Executive Officer of Streetwise Promotions, Michael Amoo-Bediako said the event would show the world what Ghana has to offer with regards to boxing.

He added that, there are amazing World Champions in Ghana and it is important to bring such bouts to Ghana for future champions.

“It is important to bring the champions home for a level playing field where they would emerge champions on home soil,” he stated.

President of the Ghana Boxing Authority, Peter Zwennes also pledged the outfit’s support to the event and asked government and corporate entities to come on board to make the event a successful one.

Chief Executive Officer of Leonant Yert(one of the sponsors), Nii Okai Nunoo added that, “boxing alone should be celebrated if there is nothing to celebrate by Ghanaians”
