Jamie Carragher has claimed Luis Suarez cost Liverpool the Premier League title when he bit Branislav Ivanovic - not Steven Gerrard's slip.

Liverpool saw their hopes of finishing top in 2014 dashed when inspirational midfielder Gerrard suffered a costly fall in the home match against Chelsea.

That allowed Demba Ba in to score the goal which ultimately led to the Reds losing the match - and they went on to miss out on the title to Manchester City by two points.

But Kop legend Carragher, 41, insists the real villain was striker Suarez - for getting himself banned at the start of the season after his ludicrous bite on Chelsea defender Ivanovic.

Carragher told Sky Sports: "I wasn't aware of any of this, but got back into the dressing room and then word comes in that Luis has bit Ivanovic.

"Someone asked him and he denied it. I think on that, that it cost Liverpool the league the next season.

"Suarez was banned for five or six games [the following season]. Suarez was the best player by a mile in the league -- he scored almost every game.

"In the first four games he missed, Liverpool lost 1-0 to Southampton and drew at Swansea. They dropped five points.

"You don't realise at the time, looking back now, and the season he had the next year, Player of the Year, Football Writers' Player of the Year, I think if he'd been playing in those games it would've been different."

Despite his early ban, Suarez still struck 31 league goals that season but ultimately the side fell short and he left to join Barcelona for £65million.

It took Liverpool four years, and a change of manager, to build a squad capable of challenging for the Premier League again - when last season they missed out by a whisker to City.
"If Suarez is playing, they probably win both of them, but let's be conservative, you beat Southampton at home.
