Minister for Sports and Recreation, Kofi Iddie Adams, has officially launched the 24th African Senior Athletics Championships, set to take place in Accra from May 12-17, 2026.

The ceremony was attended by key officials, sports administrators, athletes, media representatives, and distinguished guests, all united in their enthusiasm for what promises to be a landmark sporting event on the continent.

Addressing the gathering, Kofi Adams emphasized Ghana’s deep sense of responsibility and preparedness in hosting the prestigious championships. “From the moment Ghana was entrusted with this honor, we have worked closely with the Confederation of African Athletics and the Local Organising Committee to ensure everything is in place,” he stated.

He reaffirmed the government’s unwavering commitment, highlighting the support from the highest levels of leadership, including President John Dramani Mahama, to foster the growth and visibility of athletics in Ghana.

The Minister paid tribute to Ghana’s rich sporting history, citing legendary figures like Mike Ahey and Alice Anum, and current stars such as Abdul Rasheed Saminu and Rose Yeboah, whose performances continue to inspire a new generation of athletes.

“Our grassroots programs, like the recent inter-school competitions in Kumasi, showcase the talent and passion of our youth. The future of Ghanaian athletics is bright,” he said.

To build on this momentum, the government has established the Ghana Sports Fund, aimed at nurturing talent, improving infrastructure, and supporting long-term development pathways. The Minister also called on Corporate Ghana to seize the opportunity presented by Accra 2026 to invest in athletics, emphasizing the sport’s potential as a powerful branding and marketing platform.

“Africa is coming to Accra,” he declared. “We invite our continental brothers and sisters to join us in making this event a success and a showcase of Africa’s best athletes. When visitors arrive, we want them to feel at home and see Ghana’s readiness to host a world-class championship.”

Concluding his remarks, the Minister urged collaborations across sectors and nations to ensure that Accra 2026 not only elevates the sport but also leaves a lasting legacy for future generations.

As the countdown begins, Ghana stands poised to deliver an event that promises to move athletics forward and deepen the continent’s love for the sport.
