Ghana and Chelsea legend, Michael Essien, has explained how the move to play his football for Azerbaijani’s Sabail FK took place.

The deal which will run till May 2020 will see Essien join the club’s U-19 coaching staff to acquire coaching experience as part of completing his UEFA B qualification, a continuation of the coaching work he has been doing with Chelsea U16.

"I was here three weeks ago. Had a good chat with the club and they told me about the project. I thought about it, liked it and here we are," Essien told the club’s website.

"It's a different thing to what I have seen before. Looks interesting and exciting, so happy to be here," Essien added.

The 36-year old is expected to be in action for the club after the international break.

Michael Essien had stints with top European clubs such as Real Madrid, Olympic Lyon, AC Milan, and Panathinaikos.

He last played for Indonesian side Persip Bandung in 2018.
