Parliament has officially launched the second edition of the annual Democracy Cup at a ceremony at the Justice D. F. Annan Auditorium within Parliament House on Thursday, July 24, 2025.

The event was held under the auspices of the Speaker of Parliament, Rt. Hon. Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin.

During the launch, Accra giant Hearts of Oak and Accra Great Olympics were unveiled as the two football teams selected to compete in this year’s Democracy Cup.

Initiated in 2024 by the Parliament of Ghana, the Democracy Cup is a sporting event aimed at promoting civic engagement and national unity through football.

The maiden edition took place at the Accra Sports Stadium on July 17, 2024, where Kumasi Asante Kotoko beat Accra Hearts of Oak 2-1 to lift the inaugural trophy.

The Democracy Cup forms part of Parliament’s wider strategy to connect with the citizenry through sports and shared national events.

It symbolises Ghana’s democratic journey and the role of sports in fostering peace, cohesion, and patriotism.

The festivities will commence with an exhibition match pitting the Parliament of Ghana against a team of former Black Stars players.
