President Nana Akufo-Addo has urged FIFA to increase slots for African teams at the World Cup to ten(10) to ensure that more teams are allowed to compete in the global showpiece.
The President was speaking at the Flag Staff House on Monday when FIFA President Gianni Infantino visited the country as part of his working tour in Africa.
Currently the continent has five slots at the World Cup and President Nana Addo said “increasing the number of representatives especially for Africa would make the event more competitive.â€
He added that, it would also give the opportunity for other countries to experience the World Cup.
In his response, the FIFA President said Africa would certainly get more than seven slots when the World Cup is expanded in 2026.

“African representation will definitely be more than seven. But working on the precise number,†he stated.
No African country has ever won the World Cup and the closest an African team got to the title was the quarter finals. Ghana was close to the semifinals in 2010 when Asamoah Gyan missed that famous penalty against Uruguay at the quarter finals.
