There will be no European football at the Anfield next season after Liverpool lost 3-1 to Sevilla in the UEFA Europa League final in Basel on Wednesday May 18 to miss their last chance of qualifying for Europe.

A win would have seen them qualify for the Champions League but in a match where they had over 70% of possession, the Reds squandered a 1-0 first half lead and lost miserably.

Daniel Sturridge put Liverpool ahead with stunning goal in the 35th minute and four minutes later, Dejan Lovren's header from a James Milner corner was in the net but was disallowed because Sturridge was in an offside position before the ball entered the net.

The first half ended with Liverpool on the high but whatever Sevilla manager, Unai Emery told his players in the dressing room worked perfectly as they turned the tie on its head in the second half.

Just 17 seconds into the second half, the Spaniards got an equaliser after some very poor defending from Alberto Moreno put Mariano through to square the ball for Gameiro to tap in and they did not look back.

Their Captain, Coke gave them the lead in the 64th minute with a 20-yard shot with his right foot which went in the bottom left corner of Simon Mignolet's goal.

The captain's second and Sevilla's scored from close range in the 70th minute was viewed as offside by the Liverpool defenders but it stood.
