Things are not looking good for Liverpool star Philippe Coutinho, after the Brazilian star arrived at hospital today wearing a huge ankle brace.

The attacking midfielder struggled along on crutches while his usually lethal right foot was completely encased in a protective boot.

Coutinho picked up the injury in Liverpool's recent clash with Sunderland, after a challenge with Didier N'dong saw the Brazilian's right ankle take full impact.

Liverpool are now waiting nervously to learn the full extent of the injury, and how long they will be without the services of their star man.

'Phil has his scans this afternoon. What I can say is that it's too long because the best thing is that he's not out. We have to take it how it is,' manager Jurgen Klopp said in his press conference earlier today.

Initial reports state Coutinho will be out until at least the new year, while today's scan will give the Reds a comprehensive idea as to when their man will return to action.

The playmaker has been influential for the Reds so far this season and has been a driving force behind the early title bid mounted by Klopp's men.

Coutinho leads the way for Liverpool in terms of goals scored this season, currently sitting on six alongside fellow Brazilian Roberto Firmino and Sadio Mane.

After leaving the field to hearty applause at Anfield Coutinho was replaced by Divock Origi.

Switching his felled star with the Belgian striker soon turned out to be a shrewd move by Klopp, after the 21-year-old curled in a sublime effort on 75 minutes to raise spirits at Anfield and set the Reds on their way to an eventual 2-0 victory.

The win ensured Liverpool remained in contention at the summit of the Premier League, just one point off Antonio Conte's recently rejuvenated Chelsea side.

The Reds return to action on Tuesday when they face Leeds United in the EFL Cup quarter finals. Mail Online
