The National Sports Authority (NSA) has, with immediate effect, suspended all boxing activities in the country.
The decision, which was taken in consultation with the Ministry of Sports and Recreation, follows the tragic death of boxer Ernest Oko Akushey, popularly known as Bahubali.
Bahubali died just 11 days after his heavy defeat to Jacob Dickson in a super middleweight bout at the Bukom Boxing Arena.
Though the cause of death has not been diagnosed, many suspect it could be remotely related to the punches sustained in the ring during his defeat to Dickson on Friday, September 12, 2025.
According to the NSA, the decision to suspend all boxing activities reflects a joint commitment with the sector ministry “to prioritize the safety, health and welfare of athletes”.
“It is worth noting that prior to this unfortunate incident, the NSA and Ministry, together with key stakeholders in the boxing fraternity, had concluded preparations to implement the recommendations of the Ministerial Committee on Boxing,” a press statement dated September 25, 2025 said.
“These include a comprehensive five-year safety and development plan, anchored on the establishment of a nine-member Interim Management Committee (IMC) to oversee the affairs of the sport.”

It added that the reforms are targeted at strengthening medical, technical and regulatory procedures.
The Authority is, therefore, urging all stakeholders to fully respect the directive.
“While the suspension may present immediate challenges, it remains a necessary step to protect lives, preserve the integrity of the sport, and secure its future.”
