Mrs Rebecca Akufo Addo on Wednesday launched the maiden edition of the First Lady's Cup in Accra.

The initiative from the Ghana League Clubs Association (GHALCA) will be an annual tournament to honour the spouse of the sitting President and this year is for Rebecca Akufo-Addo.

The colourful event was attended by high-profile personalities including Second Lady, Mrs Samira Bawumia, Chief of Staff, Mrs Akosua Frema Osei-Opare, Minister for Youth and Sports Hon. Mustapha Ussif and the President of the Ghana Football Association, Kurt Okraku.

Others include Ministers of State, Members of Parliament and captains of industries.

Speaking at the launch, Rebecca Akufo-Addo she said felt honoured to be given the platform to speak about Women's football, revealing that the competition will be played next month.

"Today is historic, we are gathered here to launch the First Lady's Cup. This Cup competition is the Women's version of the President's Cup," she said.

"It is also a new era for Women's football in Ghana and also recognizes the importance of shining the spotlight on Women's football and giving it the necessary push."

"It is, therefore, an honour for me to address you all at the maiden First Lady's Cup to be played in Accra on December 10, 2021."

Meanwhile, GHALCA has expressed gratitude to all and sundry who graced the lanch of the First Lady's Cup.

A statement said: "The Executive Council of GHALCA would like to thank the First Lady of Ghana, Mrs. Rebecca Akufo Addo, Second Lady, Mrs. Samira Bawumia and Chief of Staff, Mrs. Akosua Frema Osei-Opare for their support and commitment to the advancement of women football.

Further appreciation to the Minister of Youth and Sports Hon. Mustapha Ussif, GFA President Kurt Okraku, Ministers of State, Members of Parliament and captains of industries for their support and commitment to the development and promotion of women football."
