The Sports Writers Association of Ghana (SWAG) held its prestigious 50th SWAG Awards ceremony on Saturday, November 15, 2025, at the Accra International Conference Centre, celebrating outstanding achievements in Ghanaian and foreign-based sports.
Antoine Semenyo emerged as the SWAG Male Footballer of the Year for foreign-based players, while Benjamin Asare was awarded Male Home-Based Footballer of the Year.
The UDS football team was honoured as the SWAG Football Personality of the Year, recognizing their exceptional performance and influence in Ghanaian football.
The evening featured a broad spectrum of awardees across various sports disciplines. Obaponba Adu claimed Badminton Player of the Year, while Emmanuel Kummey and James Marfo shared Table Tennis Player of the Year honors.
Other notable winners included Fuseinu Issah as Wrestler of the Year, Vivian Nakor for Hockey Player of the Year, and Zirnabu Issah named Para Athlete of the Year.
The diversity of sports recognized highlights the growing breadth of Ghana’s athletic talent.
In addition, special categories celebrated emerging stars and dedicated sports professionals.
Yayra Akos Agozi and Michael Agyapong Mensah received the Discovery of the Year awards for female and male athletes respectively.
The Dedication and Valour honors went to Portia Boakye and Yaw Agyemang, acknowledging their commitment to sport despite challenges.
Lifetime Achievement Awards were bestowed on iconic sports figures such as Asamoah Gyan, Andrew Ayew, Stephen Appiah, Anthony Yeboah, and Barisford, solidifying their legacy in Ghanaian sports history.
The event also acknowledged excellence in sports administration and journalism. Evans Yeboah was named Sport Administrator of the Year, while Bill Eshun earned the Sport Journalist of the Year award.
Ghana’s top federations were celebrated with Ghana Arm Wrestling Federation and Ghana Badminton Federation leading the rankings. The Police Football Team secured Club of the Year, while James Kwesi Appiah and Daniel Laryea were recognized as Coach and Referee of the Year, respectively.
The 50th SWAG Awards underscored Ghana’s rich sporting culture and the achievements of athletes across genders and disciplines. Female footballer awards went to Comfort Yeboah (home-based) and Chantelle Boye Hlorkah (foreign-based).
The National Team of the Year was the 4×100 meters Athletics team. Ambassadors of SWAG included celebrated names like Kwadwo Asamoah, Michael Essien, and Azumah Nelson. The ceremony was a grand tribute to Ghana’s vibrant sports community, inspiring future generations to excel.
