The Mayor of Accra, Michael Kpakpo Allotey, has visited several flood-affected communities across the metropolis to assess the impact of recent heavy rains, interact with affected residents, and evaluate sanitation conditions in the worst-hit areas.

The visit aimed at coordinating immediate relief interventions while strengthening long-term measures to address the city’s persistent flooding challenges.

Areas visited included Graphic Road, the Obetsebi Lamptey Interchange enclave, Kaneshie First Light, Darkuman Kokompe, the Kwame Nkrumah Interchange area, Alajo, the North and South Industrial Areas, the Korle Lagoon basin, and Jamestown.

At Jamestown, the Mayor inspected a collapsed building and assessed the extent of damage caused by the heavy rains, while also engaging residents affected by the floods.

He also visited the frontage of the AT Ghana Head Office along Barnes Road, where he supervised the removal of a large neem tree that had fallen and blocked the road following the downpour.

At Kaneshie First Light, where floodwaters had deposited sand and debris onto sections of the road, the Mayor directed immediate clearing works to restore traffic flow and reduce the risk of accidents and further obstruction.

The inspection tour also took him to several drains and low-lying communities, where he observed waste accumulation, blocked drainage channels, and other sanitation challenges believed to be contributing factors to flooding in parts of the city.

The Mayor reiterated the Assembly’s commitment to improving urban drainage systems and strengthening sanitation enforcement to reduce the recurrence of flooding in Accra.
