Luis Suarez set for an extra £100,000 a week as Barcelona look to tie down Uruguayan striker until 2020.

Barcelona have moved to tie down striker Luis Suarez to a long-term contract that would put the Uruguayan on the same wage as team-mate Neymar, but still some way short of Lionel Messi.

Suarez currently earns £170,000 a week at the Nou Camp, with his present deal with the Catalans running out in the summer of 2019.

But Luis Enrique is determined to extend his stay even further, with the La Liga giants hoping an additional £100,000 a week will tie down the former Liverpool striker for another year.

According to the Spanish media on Wednesday, Suarez will match the £272,000 a week earned by Neymar - still dwarfed by the £360,000 a week Messi takes home every seven days.

Daily newspaper Sport lead with the headline 'Suarez 2020' with 'the key to the contract renewal' being that the 'Uruguayan equals Neymar's salary'.

Barcelona 'accept that the current arrangement is outdated and that he deserves to be rewarded with a bumper deal', with both the player and the club having come to an agreement.

Mundo Deportivo go even further, believing the negotiations will be finalised before Christmas, with the contract being ironed out by the player's agent, Pere Guardiola, meaning Suarez would stay at Barcelona until 2021.

Suarez won the European Golden Shoe last season ahead of Real Madrid's Cristiano Ronaldo, with the 29-year-old scoring a remarkable 40 league goals for the La Liga champions.

It was the second time in his career that Suarez had picked up the coveted prize, after sharing the accolade with Ronaldo after his 31 goals for Liverpool during the 2013-14 campaign.

The striker, who escaped punishment for using abusive language towards an official during Barcelona's Champions League win over Borussia Monchengladbach last week, has scored eight goals in 10 appearances so far this term. Daily Mail
