Black Stars head coach Charles Kwablam Akonnor hopes of having invited UK-based players in his squad for the World Cup 2022 qualifiers against Ethiopia, South Africa have been dashed.

The gaffer handed call-ups to Daniel Amartey (Leicester City) Jordan Ayew (Crystal Palace) Tariqe Fosu (Brentford), Thomas Partey (Arsenal), Andrew Yiadom (Reading FC) and Baba Rahman (Chelsea) for the games next month.

However, the sextet are ineligible to play the matches due to Premier League clubs being reluctant to release players for international matches that will be held in ‘red list’ countries.

This is because travellers from 'red list' countries are obliged to quarantine upon their return to the UK, which for players would mean missing matches.

With the issue of Baba Rahman, it is not known if Chelsea would allow him to go and feature for the Black Stars because he was not registered to play in this season's Premier League.

The Black Stars will battle out with Ethiopia at the Cape Coast Stadium before flying to play South Africa in Johannesburg on September on 3 and 6 respectively.

Ethiopia and South Africa are among UK's red list Coronavirus countries.

"Premier League clubs have always supported their players' desires to represent their countries - this is a matter of pride for all concerned," said Premier League chief executive Richard Masters," a statement read from the Premier League said.

"However, clubs have reluctantly but rightly come to the conclusion that it would be entirely unreasonable to release players under these new circumstances.

"Quarantine requirements mean that players' welfare and fitness will be significantly impacted. We understand the challenges that exist in the international match calendar and remain open to workable solutions."

The decision, the Premier League said, "follows Fifa's current position not to extend its temporary release exception for players required to quarantine on their return from international duty".
