A drill rapper who escaped from custody twice in London hospitals has been detained in France after more than two weeks on the run.

Daniel Boakye, 21, who performs under the name Dsavv, evaded police who were guarding him in Lewisham Hospital in south-east London, where he had been taken for medical treatment, on Feb 15.

He was arrested the following day at an address in Thamesmead, south-east London.

Days before, on Feb 10, Boakye, a convicted knifepoint robber who was due to be deported to Ghana, had escaped from prison guards at West Middlesex University Hospital, in Isleworth, west London, only to be recaptured by Met Police officers the same day.

After his second escape, Boakye was smuggled out of Britain in a lorry, according to police.

The Met said on Tuesday that he was arrested in La Bouexiere, Brittany, on Monday evening.

Smuggled out of country in lorry

A Scotland Yard spokesman said: “It is believed Boakye was smuggled out of the country in a lorry after he absconded while in police custody on Feb 15. Arrangements are now under way to return him to custody in the UK.”

After his escape, Boakye apparently posted a video online taunting the police.

The video posted on Instagram last month showed a rapper performing in front of a screen featuring a newspaper story about Boakye’s first escape.

The song included the lyrics “I just broke out of jail like Modie”, referring to a character from the TV series Top Boy, and bragged about being “fresh home”, champagne and cannabis.

Boakye was jailed for six years and five months in July 2023 for being part of a gang that stole mobile phones at knifepoint before stealing £115,000 worth of cryptocurrency found on them.

Boakye, Justin Popoola, Nathan Mohalland and a 17-year-old, who has not been named, carried out the robberies between June 2021 and January 2022, forcing victims to hand over their passcodes by threatening them with knives.

Detectives tracked them down after they ordered takeaways to their home addresses using stolen bank information.

Incident review

The Metropolitan Police is now looking into the circumstances of his second escape.

A force spokesman previously said: “Daniel Boakye was in police custody at the hospital receiving medical treatment when he fled. Officers gave chase but could not detain Boakye before he left the building.

“We are currently reviewing this incident to fully understand the events which unfolded.”

A spokesman for the Home Office previously said: “All foreign national offenders who receive a prison sentence in the UK are referred for deportation at the earliest opportunity.

“We will not allow foreign criminals and illegal migrants to exploit our laws. We are reforming human rights laws and replacing the broken appeals system so we can scale up deportations.”
