AfricaClimateWeek: Let's look at waste as means of making money-Ministry of Environment

The Ministry of Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation has advised Small and medium-sized enterprises to take advantage of the plastic waste industry in solving climate change issues in Africa.

Speaking at the 'Africa Climate Week, Ghana's Nationally Determined Contributions Investment Forum' on the theme "Increase Climate Project Flow with Innovative Finance", Special Advisor to the Minister, Ministry of Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation, Oliver Boachie said one of the possible ways to tackle the issues of waste in the country is when companies and individuals see the waste menace as a money making avenue rather than a waste product.

According to him, viewing plastic waste and other waste materials as a money making avenue will help create jobs for the youth.

Managing waste in Ghana has been a problem leading to many recorded cases of flooding anytime it rains in the country especially the capital Accra.

President Akufo-Addo at the State of the Nation Address outlined some steps to deal with the issues of waste disposal in the country to fall in line with his vision of making Accra the cleanest city in Africa.

"These provisions empower the service provider to verify, assess and collect the advance recycle eco-fee on all electrical and electronic equipment from all exporting countries and to establish the state of the art recycling facility at Agbogbloshie in Accra and construction will begin in April, not only are we solving the problem of waste disposal, this will also lead to the creation of over 20,000 direct jobs."

Explaining further ways to deal with the plastic waste issues, Oliver Boachie said as part of the Ministry's clean environment agenda there is a policy currently before Cabinet which will help comprehensively deal with the plastic issue in the country.

He also added that Small and medium-sized enterprises should focus on developing good business modules that will attract the financial actors in solving climate change issues.
